Plan Your Tree-Cutting Adventure
Before you head out, review the following guidelines to ensure a smooth, safe, and enjoyable tree-harvesting experience:
General Guidelines
- Permit Required: A valid permit is necessary to cut and/or remove trees from BLM-managed lands.
- Follow Local Rules: Cutting areas, guidelines, and restrictions vary by location. Contact your local BLM office for details.
- Tree Cutting Restrictions:
- No topping of trees.
- Cut below the lowest live limb, leaving stumps no higher than six inches.
- Avoid damaging other trees during harvesting.
Travel & Parking Tips
- Drive only on existing roads and comply with road closures.
- Avoid blocking traffic when parking.
- Stay on designated roads and respect private land boundaries.
Timing & Safety
- Go Early: Snowfall can make some areas inaccessible, so early-season cutting is advised.
- Be Prepared:
- Check weather and road conditions before heading out.
- Dress warmly and pack food, water, and safety equipment.
- Let someone know your plan, including where youโll go and when youโll return.
- Stay Safe:
- If stranded, call for help and stay with your vehicle and group.
- Wear bright colors, as hunting seasons are often in full swing during this time.
After the Holidays
- Dispose of your tree responsibly. Compost it or use it as firewood if possible.
