Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy – Positive Horse in Colorado
A 17-year old quarter horse mare used for barrel racing was diagnosed with Equine Herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado. The mare is recovering from urinary incontinence and hindlimb ataxia. The premises with a total of 10 horses is quarantined with restricted movement and all horses having temperatures taken twice daily. As of this date no further horses have shown signs of the disease.

Tragedy Hits in Colorado
We recently heard of a tragedy in the equestrian community here in Colorado. One of our own, a 36-year-old woman named Laura Miller, was killed by a lightning strike as she rode her horse on a trail in Colorado this past Sunday. She was riding with a family friend when it happened. The friend survived the lightning strike.

Based on a test at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory, a 5-year old racing quarter horse in Fort Lupton, Colorado was diagnosed with Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). Colorado Horse Seizure Case
Dozens of horses were seized from a property in Penrose during an animal cruelty investigation. In regards to this Colorado Horse Seizure: On Monday, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office announced the horse owner, 42-year-old Penny Gingerich, was charged with 64 counts of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor. Gingerich has also been summoned to court.

USEF Submits Comment on USDA’s Proposed Amendments to Horse Protection Regulations
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has submitted a comment in response to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) proposed amendments to the regulations that implement the Horse Protection Act. In its comment, the USEF seeks to partner with the USDA in the eradication of soring in equestrian sport. The USEF commends the USDA in its efforts to strengthen the regulations and further protect horses from the practice of soring. Dedicated to upholding horse welfare, this comment is a part of the USEF’s on-going efforts to modify and implement rules that eliminate cheating, doping, and abuse in the sport.
