Updated 7/24/2024 7:07am: The video has been released and is posted at the bottom of this article. Unfortunately, the whipping that takes place in the video is excessive, and not effective. Is it true abuse? We will let the FEI decide. Would I allow that to happen to my horse? Absolutely not. Charlotte Dujardin has always been recognized as an ally to her horses, so this is a blow to not only those that support her, but very likely her reputation int he long term.
However, I believe that if the release of the video was genuinely motivated by concern for horse welfare, it would have been made public immediately. Holding onto it for years and choosing to release it just before the Olympics seems questionable. This does not excuse the actions of Charlotte DuJardin, but it also suggests that the timing of the video’s release was not primarily in the best interest of the horses.
Charlotte DuJardin, alongside Carl Hester, has made incredible contributions to the world of dressage and the well-being of dressage horses. Their advocacy for real turnout for competition horses has set a new standard in the industry, promoting a more holistic approach to equine care. Additionally, their practice of giving horses hacks in the countryside, rather than confining them solely to arena work, underscores their commitment to the mental and physical health of the animals.
It is important for those new to dressage or unfamiliar with these training methods to recognize that the current controversy is not representative of the community’s values. The dressage world is deeply upset and outraged by the recent events, as they stand in stark contrast to the principles of care that the community as a whole have worked hard to uphold.
We can only hope that this was an isolated incident and a momentary lapse in judgment, something many of us have experienced with our horses, albeit usually not to such an extreme. As the investigation progresses, we trust that time will reveal the full truth and provide clarity on the situation.
We would love to hear your thoughts, drop your comments at the bottom of the article.
Original article 7/23/2024: In a surprising turn of events, celebrated British equestrian Charlotte Dujardin has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming Olympics (and all competition) due to an ongoing investigation by Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) based on a video that was recently released taken 4 years ago. Dujardin, a multiple Olympic gold medalist and one of the most prominent figures in the world of dressage, has made this decision to prioritize transparency and integrity in the sport.
“A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session. Understandably, the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition—including the Paris Olympics—while this process takes place.” ~Charlotte Dujardin
The FEI investigation centers around allegations that have not been fully disclosed to the public, leaving many in the equestrian community speculating about the nature of the inquiry. Dujardin has expressed her commitment to cooperating fully with the investigation, stating that it is essential to resolve any questions or concerns thoroughly before returning to competition.
This unexpected development is a significant blow to the British equestrian team, which had high hopes for DuJardin’s participation. Known for her remarkable performances with her horse Valegro, with whom she has won numerous international titles, DuJardin’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by her team and fans worldwide.
DuJardin’s decision to step back highlights her dedication to the principles of fair play and sportsmanship. She emphasized the importance of maintaining the highest standards in equestrian sports, even if it means making difficult personal sacrifices.
As the investigation proceeds, the equestrian community remains supportive of Dujardin, recognizing her as a role model who continues to set a positive example both in and out of the arena. The hope is that the situation will be resolved swiftly and justly, allowing Dujardin to return to the sport she loves with her reputation intact.
“On 22 July 2024, the FEI received a video depicting Ms. Dujardin engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare. This video was submitted to the FEI by a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant. According to the information received, the footage was allegedly taken several years ago during a training session conducted by Ms. Dujardin at a private stable.” ~Official FEI Statement
