Dover Saddlery has announced another round of store closures and significant layoffs at its Massachusetts headquarters, leaving many equestrians wondering what the future may hold for remaining retail locations — including the Parker, Colorado store.
At this time, Colorado Horse Forum has reached out to Dover Saddlery requesting clarification on whether the Parker location is at risk of closure, but no official response has been received yet.
The company recently filed notice with Massachusetts officials that it plans to eliminate more than 100 positions at its Littleton, Massachusetts headquarters and distribution center later this summer. The filing was made under the federal WARN Act, which requires advance notice for large layoffs or business closures.
In a statement included in filings reported by several local news outlets, Dover stated:
“Whether the layoffs or closures occur will depend in part on our success in obtaining funding or selling our business.”
Founded in 1975, Dover Saddlery grew from a single Massachusetts tack shop into one of the largest equestrian retail chains in the country. In recent years, however, the company has continued reducing its brick-and-mortar footprint.
Stores recently announced for closure include locations in:
- California
- Connecticut
- Illinois
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New York
Several of those stores had only opened within the last few years.
For many horse owners, Dover has long been a go-to source for tack, riding apparel, horse care products, and barn supplies. The possibility of losing additional physical retail locations is concerning for equestrians who value having local access to equine products and knowledgeable staff.
While there is currently no indication that the Parker location is closing, community support for local equestrian businesses matters. If having a local Dover Saddlery store is important to Colorado riders, now is a good reminder to support the businesses you want to keep in your community (not just Dover).
Colorado Horse Forum will continue monitoring the situation and will share updates if additional information becomes available regarding the Parker, Colorado location.
