If you’ve ever dealt with horses that seem determined to dump their grain buckets, you know how frustrating (and wasteful) it can be. Fortunately, there’s a simple, budget-friendly solution to keep feed in the bucket where it belongs! Here’s an easy method that I use to prevent my horses from tipping their buckets, saving both grain and sanity.

The Setup: What You’ll Need

  • Flexible rubber buckets with flat back: These are ideal because they’re durable, lightweight, and can withstand rough handling by enthusiastic horses.
  • A feeding post: This can be a sturdy post in your paddock or barn that you hang the buckets from. (I have designated posts in my paddocks for this).
  • Baling twine: A versatile and inexpensive staple in any barn.
  • A drill and bit: Used to make holes in the buckets for securing.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prepare the Bucket: Start by drilling two small holes near the middle on the flat side of the rubber bucket. Make sure the holes are spaced evenly apart and are big enough for the baling twine to pass through comfortably and easily go around your post.
  2. Thread the Baling Twine: Cut a length of baling twine and thread it through the holes you just drilled. This twine will serve as a secure attachment to keep the bucket in place.
  3. Secure to the Feeding Post: Position the bucket at the desired height on the feeding post, clip it on like you normally would. Wrap the ends of the baling twine around the post and tie them tightly. Ensure the bucket is snug against the post and can’t be flipped or shifted easily by your horse. Cut the loose ends of the baling twine so no mouthy horses try to eat it.
  4. Test the Setup: Give the bucket a gentle tug (or a hefty shake) to confirm that it’s securely attached. The goal is for it to remain stable and immobile when your horse eats or nudges it.

Why This Works

  • Durable and Flexible Buckets: The rubber material is tough enough to withstand horse antics while still being flexible enough not to crack or break.
  • Simple and Effective Restraint: The baling twine holds the bucket firmly in place, preventing it from being flipped or tossed, which means no more grain scattered across the ground. It is cheap, can be cut and removed easily, and has been the best solution I have found.
  • Cost-Effective: Using items you likely already have in your barn, this solution is not only effective but also budget-friendly.

Final Tips

Ensure the bucket is at a comfortable height for your horse to eat without straining. Periodically check the baling twine for wear and replace it as needed to maintain safety and effectiveness.

With just a few simple steps and inexpensive materials, you can prevent grain dumping and keep feeding time tidy and efficient. Try this method in your own paddocks and enjoy fewer feed spills and happier horses!
