Colorado horse owners now have more access to a highly specialized equine surgical procedure that, until recently, has only been available at a small number of veterinary facilities across the United States. Previously only available at CSU here in Colorado.
Through a partnership between VetweRx and Vizion Equine, horses suffering from certain types of neck-related nerve pain and forelimb lameness may now have access to an advanced surgical option known as Equine Cervical Foraminotomy.
For performance horses, unexplained forelimb lameness can be one of the most frustrating and difficult conditions to diagnose. Horses may undergo extensive lameness workups, imaging, injections, and rehabilitation programs before the true source of discomfort is identified. In some cases, the problem may not originate in the limb itself, but rather in the neck.
Understanding Cervical Foraminal Stenosis
One condition that can contribute to chronic neck pain and forelimb lameness is cervical foraminal stenosis.
The condition occurs when arthritic changes or excess bone growth narrow the openings between the vertebrae where spinal nerves exit the spinal column. As these openings become smaller, the nerves can become compressed, resulting in pain, altered movement patterns, reduced performance, and in some cases significant lameness.
Because the symptoms can mimic other musculoskeletal issues, diagnosis often requires advanced imaging techniques.
A Less Invasive Surgical Option
Traditionally, addressing spinal issues in horses has been challenging due to the size and complexity of the equine neck.
The cervical foraminotomy procedure utilizes minimally invasive endoscopic techniques that allow surgeons to access the affected area through a very small incision. Using specialized instruments, the surgeon removes the bone causing compression around the nerve root while minimizing disruption to surrounding tissues.
Compared to more invasive surgical approaches, the technique offers several potential advantages, including:
- Smaller incisions
- Reduced tissue trauma
- Faster recovery times
- Less post-operative discomfort
- Earlier return to rehabilitation
According to the veterinary teams involved, approximately 80% of horses experience meaningful clinical improvement following the procedure, with nearly three-quarters successfully returning to athletic careers.
A Collaborative Colorado Approach
One of the most exciting aspects of this development is that Colorado horse owners now have access to a comprehensive care pathway close to home.
The collaboration between VetweRx and Vizion Equine combines advanced diagnostics, specialized surgical expertise, and structured rehabilitation programs designed to support horses throughout the recovery process.
The process includes:
- Advanced cervical CT imaging
- Surgical consultation and treatment
- Post-operative rehabilitation and conditioning
- Progressive return-to-work programs
This coordinated approach helps streamline care for owners who might otherwise have needed to travel significant distances to access similar services.
Why This Matters for Colorado Horse Owners
Colorado is home to a diverse equine community, including dressage horses, jumpers, reiners, ranch horses, barrel horses, eventers, and trail companions. Access to advanced veterinary care continues to grow throughout the state, allowing owners more options when managing complex injuries and performance-limiting conditions.
While cervical foraminotomy is not a procedure every horse will need, its availability represents another example of Colorado’s veterinary community continuing to expand the level of specialized care available to horse owners.
For horses struggling with chronic neck pain or unexplained forelimb lameness, having access to cutting-edge diagnostics, surgery, and rehabilitation closer to home may offer new possibilities for both recovery and long-term performance.
As always, horse owners should consult with their veterinarian to determine whether advanced imaging or specialty referral care may be appropriate for their individual horse.
