Joan Clay is a United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Certified Instructor/Trainer, as well as a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist. Joan has won numerous USDF and Rocky Mountain Dressage Society (RMDS) championships and year-end awards over the course of her showing career. She is also an RMDS Technical Delegate and the USDF Region 5 FEI Youth Coordinator. Joan volunteers as a Chef d’Equipe for Region 5’s dressage teams at the North American Youth Championships (NAYC).
Joan’s dressage training philosophy follows the classical dressage training scale with an emphasis on strong basic skills for both the horse and rider. She works hard to understand each person’s riding goals and works to meet the needs of the horse/rider combination in order to make progress towards those goals. Joan tries to help each rider become self-sufficient in accomplishing their goals by giving them the tools and strategies they need to improve their ability to ride and improve their own horse. While her primary area of expertise is in the dressage ring, she welcomes students whose interests lie outside of dressage and has worked with students who participate in eventing, hunter/jumper, ranch versatility, endurance and basic pleasure riding.
